How to Build a Skincare Routine From Scratch (For Women Who've Never Had One)

There's a quiet confidence that comes from having a skincare routine, not because it has to be complicated, but because it's a small, consistent act of care for yourself. If you've never really had one, or you've always meant to start but didn't know where to begin, this is for you.

The good news? You don't need much. And starting simple is genuinely the best approach.

Why bother with a routine at all?

Skin is your body's largest organ, and it works hard, protecting you from the elements, regulating temperature, and acting as a barrier against the outside world. A basic routine simply helps it do that job well. Consistent cleansing removes the build-up of the day. Moisturising supports the skin barrier. SPF protects against the UV damage that causes most visible skin ageing.

That's really it. Everything else is a bonus.

Step 1: Cleanse

Cleansing removes dirt, pollution, and any SPF or makeup from the day. The key word here is gentle — you're not trying to strip your skin, just clear it. A good cleanser should leave your skin feeling clean but never tight or uncomfortable.

If you wear SPF or makeup, cleanse once in the evening. A quick, light cleanse in the morning is optional but recommended to remove any excess build up.

What to look for: a gentle, natural cleanser without harsh sulphates or synthetic fragrance, especially if your skin is on the sensitive side.

Step 2: Moisturise

This is the step that makes the most immediate difference, especially if your skin has been feeling dry, tight, or dull. A good moisturiser supports your skin barrier, the invisible layer that keeps moisture in and irritants out.

Apply to slightly damp skin after cleansing, morning and evening. You don't need a lot — a pea-sized amount is usually enough for the whole face.

Step 3: SPF (mornings only)

If there's one non-negotiable in skincare, this is it. UV exposure is responsible for the vast majority of visible skin ageing, fine lines, uneven tone, loss of firmness. SPF 30 or above, worn daily even in winter, is the single most effective thing you can do for your skin long-term.

Apply it as the last step in your morning routine, after moisturiser.

Your starter routine at a glance

Morning: Cleanse (optional) → Moisturise → SPF

Evening: Cleanse → Moisturise

That's three products. Four if you cleanse in the morning too. Done.

A note on building gradually

Once this feels effortless, and it will, usually within a few weeks, you might want to add something extra. A facial oil for deeper nourishment. A serum targeting a specific concern. An eye cream. But none of that is necessary at the start. Get the basics right first and let your skin settle.

Many women find that switching to natural, botanical products at this stage makes a real difference — particularly if skin has become more sensitive over time. Fewer ingredients, nothing  harsh, and formulas that work with your skin rather than overwhelming it.
